British broadcasting legend Clare Balding has shared a rare and deeply personal insight into her long-lasting marriage with wife Alice Arnold — revealing that “trust, honesty and laughter” are the foundations that have kept their relationship strong for more than two decades.
The couple first met in 1999 while both working at the BBC, before entering a civil partnership in 2006 and officially marrying in 2015. Now, after years together, Clare says their relationship still feels joyful and effortless.

Speaking candidly in an exclusive interview, the 55-year-old presenter explained that despite their demanding careers in broadcasting, spending quality time together has always remained a priority.
Clare said: “Alice and I just have the most lovely time together, we have so much fun and we enjoy doing the same things to relax.”
She added that their shared understanding of the broadcasting world has helped strengthen their bond over the years.
“Alice works for Mellow Magic, she’s a radio person through and through. She totally understands the broadcast environment and she’s very honest with me and will say if she thinks I haven’t done something well or could do it better, so I think there’s that level of trust and honesty.”

The beloved TV star also admitted that laughter plays a huge role in their relationship, explaining: “We laugh a lot and we are very aware of the value of our time together.”
Despite Clare’s busy schedule covering major sporting events around the world, she confessed there’s very little that could tempt her away from home life with Alice.
“I want to do good work, I want to do quality work, but I really value my time with Alice, so it has to be pretty special to take me away from that,” she said.
One of the biggest secrets to their successful marriage, according to Clare, is constant communication — especially when work forces them apart for long periods.
“You know, we talk,” she explained. “If I am away doing Winter Olympics or something like that, we talk twice or three times a day and I will message all the time.”
Clare also reflected honestly on her past relationships before meeting Alice, admitting she once tried dating men but never truly felt fulfilled.
She revealed that one former boyfriend even proposed marriage while preparing to leave for military duty, but something inside her told her not to say yes.
“He asked me to marry him and he was in the Army and he was going off,” she recalled. “And I thought ‘he’s only asking me because he thinks he’s in danger and, according to romantic films, I’m meant to say yes at this point’.”

Clare said she ultimately declined, later realising she had never fully trusted him in the first place.
Looking back, she admitted: “When I first fell in love with a woman it was completely different. Alice is by far and away the longest most serious relationship of my life.”
Away from her personal life, Clare is currently working with BT to promote its “Don’t Put Off The Switch” campaign ahead of the UK’s nationwide digital landline switchover scheduled for January 2027.
