The world of British television is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Finnian Garbutt, who has died at just 28 years old — only weeks after revealing his devastating terminal cancer diagnosis.
The rising star, best known for his role in the hit BBC drama Hope Street, passed away peacefully at home, exactly as he wished, surrounded by those who loved him most.

In an emotional statement shared on Instagram, his family confirmed the tragic news, saying he had spent his final moments in comfort with them by his side. They expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support, kind words, and donations that helped ease his final days, adding that knowing he was no longer in pain brought them some comfort amid their grief.
They described Finnian as the greatest husband, father, son, brother and friend they could ever have asked for, and asked for privacy as they prepare to share funeral details in the coming days.

Just weeks before his passing, Finnian had shared a deeply moving update with fans, revealing that his cancer had progressed rapidly and that he was entering the final stage of his life. Rather than hiding away, he chose to speak openly, explaining it was too difficult to tell everyone individually and that he now wanted to focus on spending precious time with his “amazing family and friends.”
His words struck a powerful chord. Reflecting on his journey, he shared how, despite his diagnosis, he had achieved so much — starring in over 30 episodes of a TV show, landing a leading film role, buying his own home, marrying the love of his life, and becoming a father to his baby daughter, Saoirse, who he said never failed to make him smile.
His battle with cancer began five years ago after he noticed a mole on his scalp, later diagnosed as malignant melanoma. Although he underwent surgery in 2022, the disease returned aggressively, and by August 2024 he had been diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma — just two weeks before welcoming his daughter into the world with wife Louise Agnew.

Even in the face of such devastating news, Finnian remained determined to raise awareness. He urged others to check their skin and not ignore warning signs, explaining that melanoma can spread rapidly through the body if not caught early. He admitted he had never expected to face such a serious illness, describing how it had completely changed his life and future ambitions.
In his final posts, he continued to thank those who had supported him and even invited friends and fans to meet up for a coffee or a pint — a gesture that perfectly captured his warmth and courage until the very end.
From his role as police constable Ryan Power in Hope Street to his appearances in projects like Housejackers and Casualty, Finnian had been carving out a promising career. But beyond the screen, it is his resilience, honesty, and love for his family that have left the deepest mark.
