Sara Cox has opened up about the harsh realities behind her decades-long career, admitting that balancing success with motherhood has come at an emotional cost — and calling one lingering double standard “ridiculous.”
The 51-year-old broadcaster, who joined BBC Radio 2 in 2013 before taking over the coveted Drivetime slot in 2019 from Simon Mayo, reflected on how her journey has evolved — especially after becoming a mother.

She admitted that while she deeply loves her career, it hasn’t come without sacrifice. Sara explained that her children are aware her work sometimes takes her away, but she hopes it also shows them something important about ambition and independence. She said she believes it’s good for children to see a woman who is driven, even though she didn’t always feel comfortable embracing that label herself.
Looking back, she confessed that when she was younger, ambition felt almost like “a dirty secret” — something she wasn’t proud to admit. And it’s that mindset she now questions most.
Sara didn’t hold back as she called out the gender imbalance, bluntly saying it’s ridiculous and that she doubts a man would ever feel the same hesitation about being ambitious.
But turning 50 brought a major shift in perspective.

She revealed that she now speaks her mind far more freely and no longer worries about how her opinions might be received — even if it bruises egos. Sara added that she’s far less concerned about what others think and finds that freedom genuinely liberating.
Away from her regular radio show and her podcast The Teen Commandments, Sara’s career could be heading in an exciting new direction.
Reports suggest she’s being lined up for a high-profile role at the Eurovision Song Contest, potentially stepping in alongside Rylan Clark following the shock departure of Scott Mills.
The shake-up came after the BBC confirmed Scott is no longer contracted to work with them, following allegations relating to his personal conduct — claims he has yet to publicly address.

While many of his colleagues, including Sara, have remained silent on the controversy, Jeremy Vine acknowledged the news live on air, admitting he had only just learned of the situation moments before reporting it.
As Sara stands at this new chapter — more outspoken, more confident, and possibly on the brink of another major role — one thing is clear: she’s no longer holding back.
