Carey Mulligan basked in a deeply emotional milestone as she was awarded a CBE by King Charles III at Windsor Castle — with her husband Marcus Mumford proudly standing by her side.
The BAFTA-winning actress, now 40, admitted she felt “extraordinary” after being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to drama — a recognition she described as both humbling and surreal.

Dressed elegantly in a cream boucle jacket paired with oversized black trousers, Carey posed with her honour, radiating quiet confidence and gratitude. But it was the presence of Marcus — her partner of over a decade — that added a deeply personal touch to the moment.
The couple, who married in 2012, share three children together: Evelyn, eight, Wilfred, five, and a third child born in September 2023 whose name they’ve chosen to keep private.
Despite her global success, Carey remained grounded as she reflected on her career, saying she feels incredibly lucky to do a job she truly loves — and that receiving such recognition makes it all the more meaningful.
She said she feels unbelievably fortunate to be doing something she’s passionate about, adding that having this level of recognition on top of it all feels extraordinary to her.

A future Bond — and impossible expectations
Fresh from the ceremony, Carey was asked the question on everyone’s lips: who could possibly replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond?
Her answer was honest — and telling.
She admitted it’s a really difficult question, saying whoever steps into the role has big shoes to fill. She added that Daniel was an extraordinary actor and not necessarily the obvious choice at the time, which is exactly why the next Bond simply has to be someone with incredible acting ability.
Carey is set to reunite with Daniel on screen in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, alongside Hollywood legend Meryl Streep — another major chapter in her already decorated career.

A love story decades in the making
While the royal honour marked a career high, Carey’s love story with Marcus offered an equally touching narrative.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain, she revealed that their relationship began long before fame — as childhood pen pals.
They met at a summer camp as kids and stayed in touch through letters, long before smartphones existed. She recalled how they even used fax machines at one point, joking that kids today should bring back the tradition of pen pals.
After losing contact for around a decade, the pair reconnected when Carey was 24 — and the rest, as they say, is history.
Their wedding day also came with a humorous twist. Carey remembered how painful her shoes were that she eventually told Marcus he’d have to carry her — and he did, though not without struggling slightly as he put her down, out of breath.

A career defined by quiet brilliance
From her breakthrough role in An Education — which earned her a BAFTA — to Oscar-nominated performances in Promising Young Woman and Maestro, Carey has built a reputation as one of Britain’s most respected actresses.
Now, with a CBE to her name and a flourishing family life behind the scenes, she stands as a rare blend of talent, humility, and enduring love — a star who has never lost sight of what truly matters.
