Michelle Ryan is reportedly making a dramatic return to EastEnders, two decades after she last appeared as Zoe Slater on the beloved BBC soap.
Now 41, the actress is said to have finally agreed to reprise the iconic role, which she originally played from 2000 to 2005. According to insiders, producers have been eager to bring her back for years — and now, the timing is said to be “perfect.”

“People still talk about Zoe,” a source told The Sun. “Getting Michelle back is a huge win for the show. She feels this is the right moment, and there’s a cracking storyline waiting for her.”
Zoe Slater remains one of EastEnders’ most memorable characters, especially for her shocking storyline in 2001, when it was revealed Kat Slater — not her sister but her mother — in one of the soap’s most explosive scenes. Fans will never forget Zoe’s line: “You ain’t my mother!”, followed by Kat’s emotional response: “Yes I am!”

Michelle quit the soap in 2005, with her character believing she had killed Den Watts. Reflecting on her exit years later, the actress admitted she had grown tired of the role, calling the daily grind of soap life “boring” and expressing her desire to explore other projects.
Since leaving EastEnders, she has appeared in major roles including the U.S. reboot Bionic Woman. Michelle once described her time on the soap as “an apprenticeship” and said she preferred the freedom of moving between roles.

However, her return marks a shift — and fans are buzzing with anticipation.
Earlier this year, the show’s 40th anniversary passed without Zoe’s return, leaving many viewers disappointed. But now, it seems producers and Michelle have finally aligned on a comeback fans have been craving for years.
