Half a century after it first aired, The Good Life is getting the celebration it deserves – and its most iconic star is leading the tribute. Dame Penelope Keith, now 85, is returning to the role that made her a household name as Margo Leadbetter in a brand-new 120-minute special airing on comedy channel U&Gold.

The programme, The Good Life: Inside Out, marks 50 years since the debut of the hit BBC sitcom that ran from 1975 to 1978 and became a quintessential part of British culture. The show followed a suburban couple who quit their jobs to live self-sufficiently, much to the dismay (and secret envy) of their upscale neighbours, including Margo, played with unforgettable flair by Keith.
In this special, Dame Penelope steps back into a recreation of Margo and Jerry Leadbetter’s drawing room to guide viewers through the sitcom’s history. She revisits old sets, filming locations, and treasured props – from original scripts to production notes – in a nostalgic journey back to one of British TV’s most beloved comedies.

“I am delighted that U&Gold has invited me to celebrate 50 years of The Good Life,” said Keith. “It was a series close to my heart – a wonderful cast, great scripts, and an outstanding production team. I just can’t believe it’s been 50 years since I first played Margo. Where have the years gone?”
The retrospective will also include archival interviews with her late co-stars Richard Briers (Tom Good), Felicity Kendal (Barbara Good), and Paul Eddington (Jerry Leadbetter), along with the show’s original producer-director John Howard Davies.

Felicity Kendal, now 78, reflected on the show’s unexpected success, recalling how she was cast after Richard Briers saw her in a play and personally recommended her. Despite initial doubts about the show’s unusual premise, The Good Life became a national phenomenon – with its 1977 Christmas special drawing an audience of 21 million viewers.
This latest tribute follows a 2010 BBC documentary made for the show’s 35th anniversary. Now, The Good Life is once again in the spotlight – and with Dame Penelope Keith at the helm, its legacy is set to shine even brighter.
