Heart Radio’s Jamie Theakston has opened up in a deeply emotional interview with Davina McCall, revealing how a sore throat turned into a devastating cancer diagnosis — just as he was packing for a dream family trip to Japan.
The 54-year-old DJ shared on the Begin Again podcast that he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of laryngeal cancer last September. Initially brushing off his symptoms, Jamie’s world was rocked when a doctor bluntly told him it was “probably cancer.”
Despite the shock, Jamie kept the news from his family during their holiday, hoping the tests might come back clear. “I didn’t tell anyone,” he admitted. “I just couldn’t ruin the trip.”
After the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, Jamie broke the news to his wife Sophie, who was devastated. The hardest moment, he recalled, was telling his young son — especially after the boy had recently witnessed his grandmother’s passing from cancer.
Jamie underwent three operations, including one that came dangerously close to damaging his vocal cords. At one point, doctors warned he might lose his ability to speak entirely.
Fortunately, Jamie made a full recovery and triumphantly returned to Heart Breakfast in January. On air, he marked the four-month anniversary of his diagnosis with a powerful announcement: “As of today, I’m cancer-free.”
