The renowned actor, celebrated for classics from The Italian Job to The Dark Knight trilogy, was pushed onstage during the festival’s opening ceremony in Jeddah on Thursday. This appearance marks one of the first times Caine has been fully wheelchair-bound at a major festival. His frailty follows a major back operation to treat spinal stenosis earlier this year. Yet according to his wife Shakira, he is a “strong man” who refuses to slow down.
