Jessie J made a triumphant return to television on Strictly Come Dancing, just months after undergoing major surgery for breast cancer. The 37-year-old singer, who recently admitted there were moments when she thought she was “going to die,” received a standing ovation as fans and judges alike were moved to tears by her emotional performance.

The Price Tag star was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer earlier this year and had a full mastectomy in June, only weeks after performing at Wembley’s Summertime Ball. Sharing candid updates with fans, she admitted recovery has been painful, but she refused to rely on pain medication, insisting: “I want to feel everything so I don’t push myself too far.”

Appearing at the pre-recorded launch of Strictly 2025, Jessie stunned in a red suit and white T-shirt as she performed her new track Don’t Tease Me With A Good Time from her long-awaited fifth album. Viewers flooded social media with emotional reactions, with one fan writing: “Not Jessie J making me tear up. Look at her showing cancer who’s boss.” Another added: “Jessie J is an absolute powerhouse.”

Speaking openly in recent weeks, the star confessed she often felt cancer had “robbed” her of precious memories with her two-year-old son Sky, whom she shares with her basketball player partner Chanan Colman. “Yesterday I sobbed. I felt like I couldn’t be a mum to my son and I miss him. I had moments where I thought this is going to go left and I’m going to die,” she told Jamie Laing on his Great Company podcast.
Jessie recalled the heartbreak of her diagnosis after being told by doctors the lump was “probably just a cyst.” She also described how the energy of her Summertime Ball performance replayed in her mind before surgery, calling it “like a giant hug” from the crowd. After surgery, she broke down when her mum massaged her scars, telling her, “I can’t believe this has happened,” while her mother wept and said she wished she could take her daughter’s place.

Despite the emotional toll, Jessie has vowed to stay strong. Another surgery is planned later this year, which has forced her to postpone her UK and European tour dates and cancel her US shows. Yet, she insists: “I can do it.”
With her fifth album finally complete and her Strictly comeback reminding the world of her powerhouse vocals, Jessie J has shown she remains not only a survivor but also one of Britain’s most inspiring stars.
