400 surgeries, a lost sense of ‘pretty privilege’, and a world that judged her worth by appearance – But Katie Piper Just Got More Powerful Than Ever

TV presenter and activist Katie Piper has opened up about how her life and societal treatment changed dramatically after surviving a brutal acid attack in 2008. Now 41, the Loose Women star reflects on her recovery, the loss of what she calls “pretty privilege,” and how she’s become stronger than ever.

In her new memoir Still Beautiful, Katie explains that before the attack, her appearance gave her certain advantages. “I always thought my power lay in being pretty – and in my twenties, it did,” she said during a book talk. “My profession relied not just on what I looked like, but on my confidence and self-esteem.”

The attack, arranged by her ex-boyfriend when she was just 24, left her partially blind and with severe scarring. She’s since undergone over 400 surgeries. Katie shared how she had to rethink her identity and value outside of physical beauty, stating, “When a man throws acid on the face of a woman, it is to remove her most powerful currency.”

Now a celebrated author, mentor, and campaigner, Katie mentors other burn survivors, many of whom were injured in accidents. She highlights how her case was different – a deliberate act intended to destroy her sense of worth. Yet she insists: “There is so much more beyond what you see on the surface – and I’m now my most powerful self.”

She also spoke candidly about society’s perception of victims: “I was considered a ‘believable victim’ because I was white, blonde, from a middle-class family, and articulate. But that shouldn’t be the standard.”

Her attacker David Lynch is serving life for rape and orchestrating the acid assault. The man who threw the acid, Stefan Sylvestre, was jailed in 2009, released in 2018, then recalled to prison in 2022. He is believed to have since fled the UK, prompting an international manhunt.

Katie has gone on to receive an OBE for her work with burns survivors and charity efforts. She continues to be a voice of strength and resilience, proving that her power now goes far beyond beauty.
