🎙️💔 Sara Cox Breaks Her Silence In Emotional Message After Replacing Her Friend Of More Than 30 Years, Scott Mills, At Radio 2

Sara Cox has shared an emotional message to her closest friends after officially stepping into one of the biggest jobs in British radio — taking over the legendary Radio 2 Breakfast Show from longtime friend and former colleague Scott Mills.

The 51-year-old broadcaster celebrated the huge career moment with a quiet lunch alongside two of her closest friends, posting a smiling snap to Instagram while enjoying what she called “booze-free bubbles.”

But it was the heartfelt caption that really caught fans’ attention.

Sara wrote: “Pre-breakfast show announcement booze-free bubbles with the greatest 2 wingwomen I could wish for.

“Always there to cheer me on or pick me up & dust me down. Thank you for decades of friendship, love, support & lols.”

The post arrived just days after the BBC confirmed Sara would officially replace Scott on the station’s flagship Breakfast Show later this summer — a role she admitted she has dreamed about ever since joining Radio 2.

In a statement following the announcement, Sara confessed she was overwhelmed by the opportunity.

“There are not enough adjectives to really sum up how I’m feeling about being trusted with such an iconic show but let’s start with ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed,” she said.

“It’s been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me.”

She also thanked listeners from her hugely successful Teatime show, which she has hosted for the past seven years, adding that she hoped they would follow her into the breakfast slot for “excellent music and all my usual nonsense plus some superstar guests.”

Sara and Scott’s friendship stretches back more than 30 years after both joined Radio 1 during the late 1990s. Their bond continued long after they became household BBC names, with Sara even attending Scott’s wedding to husband Sam in Barcelona back in 2024.

And despite the difficult circumstances surrounding Scott’s departure from the BBC, Sara previously showed public support for him. Scott himself had also praised Sara repeatedly over the years, including during her Children In Need challenge last November when he called her “a hero” and said he was “so proud.”

The radio shake-up doesn’t stop there either.

Sara is also set to take over Eurovision semi-final commentary duties — another role previously held by Scott. She will now join Rylan Clark for the BBC’s coverage leading up to the 2026 Eurovision final in Vienna, Austria.

Scott’s BBC exit came after historical allegations of serious sexual offences resurfaced. Police confirmed he had been questioned under caution in 2018 over allegations said to date between 1997 and 2000, though the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the case in 2019 due to insufficient evidence.

Sources close to the presenter reportedly described him as “the nicest man in showbiz” and claimed friends were deeply concerned about his mental health following the fallout.
